BACKGROUND: |
Raised
on my family property at Wallumbilla (halfway between Pickinjinnie
and Armoo), and learnt to ride, generally fooling around after
school and mustering.
My
first
competition ride was at a local sports day, riding my mighty
Honda Z50 and winning the keyhole race outright. My first
'real' race was at Emerald where I raced my old XR250 at a club
motocross while at Ag College. After College, I joined the Roma
Motorcycle Club and started racing Club motocross and enduro
events. I spent a year racing the Sunstate Motocross Series,
but didn't really enjoy motocross, so started concentrating on
the Queensland Two Day Enduro Series, and the Honda Pony Express
Series with my old pal Dan (Brown) Ey. I got to see a lot of
the country, being one of those "tough buggers" from the
Queensland team that no-one had ever heard of, but who showed
up at the National Series and stuck it to everyone. Eventually
a mortgage got in the way, and I got sick of being belted up by
Eucalyptus Interruptis, so gave it away.
Meanwhile I had bought an R1 and spent a fair few
of my weekends traveling to the Gold Coast to Darlington Park,
to Brisbane to Lakeside, and to Warwick to track days. I
happened to be in Toowoomba one weekend and heard that a Motard
event was happening at Helidon, so took a quick trip down the
range for a look and got hooked.
Showed up for my first Motard race on the old
black beast (KTM380) on a second-hand set of Harley tyres that
one of the tyre suppliers in Roma had lying around, and the rest
as they say is history.
After a couple of race seasons, and using some of
my old enduro contacts, I got a good deal on my KTM SMR525,
which gave me a good couple of racing years.
Towards the end of 2007, Rising Sun Honda in
Townsville helped me out with a 2008 CRF450 (with a 480 kit so I
could finish the race season in the S1 Class), and after ten
years on KTMs, it took me about five minutes get in tune with
the Honda. And the story
continues..........................
(Wallumbilla is actually just east
of Roma.)

CAREER LOWLIGHTS: |
Breaking my leg the week before the final round of the 2005
Australian Supermoto Championships, in which I was coming third,
and two weeks before the final round of the Queensland State
Supermoto Championships which I was leading. I took a
detour to Brisbane on the way to Newcastle and had an electric
start fitted to my bike, cut my cast off my leg the night before
the race, cut my boot open so I could lever my foot in with tyre
levers and tape it all together again, and rode the final round
of the Australian Titles, maintaining my third position for the
Series. Unfortunately, sports-legal painkillers just
weren't doing the job for me, so I had to pull out of the
Queensland Championships.
Traveling to Darwin for the 2007 TERRA Challenge and having my
bike lunch itself in practice - but thanks to the Whitsunday
boys I still got to race the Supermotard event.
Missing my fuel stop on the return leg of the Finke Desert Race
and running out of fuel a couple of kilometres from the finish
line, and while I was pushing my bike, watching other bikes in
my class pass me.
